Cheap, High Quality Travel Camera?...

...I'm taking a study abroad trip around the world in the fall (Spain, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Viet Nam, China, & Japan). I'm looking for a camera that is good for beginners, takes high quality pictures, isn't huge, and won't break my wallet.

Any ideas?

What's a cheap camera with good focus?...

...I need a camera that is basically nothing past $500 :S
I'm thinking of a Nikon D40, but I will still have trouble getting that type of money from my parents. Is there any camera that is cheap with a really good manual focus? I really need it for a photography starter project, and I can't use the one I have now. Thanks in advance!
